I very rarely write reviews. However, if you have a hardwood floor problem that is important to you and has lots of complexity and pitfalls, I recommend Nor-Cal Floor Design . They have just finished and they did a great job. We had a big water leak and then flood of our home in Truckee, Calif. The cherry floor was ruined…..and it was a favorite part of the house to me. Nor-Cal was timely, professional and easy to deal with. More important, they made tough issues go away, e.g.:

– the floor is only made by a company in Austria and was 14 years old.
– the manufacturer no longer made the right thickness, but made a special run.the original length was not available, but that issue was worked around.
– air freight was expensive, but necessary for timing and was fully examined and minimized.
– special little needs like matching colors, saving extra wood, blending finishes and providing access to a mid floor electric outlet were accommodated with zero hassle.

The problem was not fun, but having capable help whom I like and trust sure made it easier.

We spent 4 years constructing our new 5,000 sq.ft home.  We spared NO expense.  In order to achieve the rugged, worn look we desired, we found and tore down a 105 year old fish cannery in Alaska and had the wood from the cannery and its pier shipped to Mammoth Lakes, Cal.  The extra wide distressed plank wood floors came from Europe.  Nor-Cal Floor Design (Matt) was both patient and creative in dealing with myself, the contractor, the architect and most of all Jim Sams, the designer.   Color after color, tint after tint, finish after finish, the process was completed to exacting specifications that we all felt complimented the design and feel of the home.  Matt never wavered in his desire to please us and help accomplish our dream.  His knowledge about woods, finish, color and installation always made us feel confident that we were in “good” hands.  As it turned out, we were in great hands!  He completed the installation in a very timely manner and even a little ahead of schedule.  The finish he used has held up well in spite of 3 dogs, two teenagers and many guests coming in and out with their shoes on both summer and winter. I would highly recommend Matt and Nor-Cal Floor Design to any discriminating contractor, designer or owner installing wooden floors of any type.
